Self-Care Tips For Parents During Pandemic and Post-Pandemic Times

Parents and Pandemic Affects

It is important to note that parents have been under more pressure than ever during this pandemic. While the mental health field has produced numerous articles on how COVID 19 has affected key populations, there is a gap in the literature regarding parental effects. It is more important than ever for the country, mental health practitioners and the medical field to work together to provide parental support even during post-pandemic times. Below is key information regarding the pervasive impacts of COVID 19 on parents through a variety of different perspectives.

  1. Parents have reported increasing stress levels than ever before. Overwhelming familial issues including economic security, lack of schooling, and decreased child care options have created burnt out and depressed parents. (Brown, et. al., 2020)
  2. Parental stress has led to increases in alcohol consumption. Coping through drinking has become the new norm as parents deal with virtual learning, economic insecurity and increasing child care involvement. (Chadwick, et. al., 2021)
  3. Parents have been more susceptible to mental health symptoms as COVID 19 stressors increase and social adjustments continue. (Prime & Wade, 2020)
  4. Family and parental well-being have been shown to be supported by key factors including: “communication, organization (adaptability, connectedness, and access to social and economic resources), and (c) belief systems (meaning- making, hope, and spirituality).” (Brown, Prime, & Wade, 2020)
  5. “In a US survey, the majority of parents expressed that during the pandemic, concerns about finances, social isolation, criticism from others, as well as emotional experiences of sadness and loneliness were affecting their parenting.” (Gagne, et al., 2021)

  2. Foster and keep social connections - Positive friendships can increase self-esteem and have incredible benefits to your overall health. Strive to connect with friends or family members at least once a week.
  3. Engage in a hobby - Every parent deserves to engage in some hobby. Even if you are busy, it is important to carve out some time for yourself. Take up running or walking. Join a zoom exercise class. Engage in adult coloring or gardening. Start baking or cooking your favorite dishes. This will not only make you feel less stressed, but you will also be a better parent if you invest in yourself.
  4. Create a spa day - When the children are asleep, sometimes it is worth it to soak in a warm bath tub and listen to calming music. Use soaps, lotions, and perfumes that you already have to create an ultimate oasis.
  5. Create a financial journal - Covid 19 has tested everyone’s financial security. However, there is a way to worry less about finances through planning and intentionality. Invest in a journal or notebook and keep it and a pen in your purse or in the car.  Create three categories including Item, Price, and Justification. Everytime you go shopping for nonessential items, fill out the three journal categories. This will increase your awareness of personal finances.
