Letting Go Of Fear: Five Mindful Practices

Written by: Wendy Ronovech

Emotions are concepts that offer us information about how we’re seeing the world in that moment. Fear is nothing but an emotion, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be. Giving fear the power to hold you back will have you missing out on so many of life’s exciting adventures.  Everyone handles worries and fears in their own way.

heart on hand

Our thoughts create our emotion. Focusing on things that do not support us are likely to instill fear and perhaps even keep us in a state that does not help us move forward.  Emotions related to fear include horror, dread, fright, alarm, shock, and unrest. If we are honest with ourselves most of us will have to admit that we live our lives on an ocean of fear, spending too much time trying to avoid recognizing that fact. When you move in close to your fears and observe them as they surface in the form of thoughts, feelings, and body sensations you will be in a better position to recognize them for what they are and know how to respond with mindfulness.

Here are five, mindful practices to letting go of fear:

Notice what is present. Identify body sensations such as an elevated heartbeat.

  1. Take 3 deep breathes at a slow and steady pace.

  2. Name the fear.

  3. Place your hands over your heart as an expression of self-care.

  4.  Say a few phases of well-wishing towards yourself and for others.
